The catalysis group of Institute of Physical Chemistry "Ilie Murgulescu" belonging to Romanian Academy focuses on activities aiming to protect the environment, to create non-polluting energy using natural resources and solar energy, to synthesize products of high added values.

Major areas of research are:
• Technologies for preparation of eco-nanoporous materials with purposely designed features;
• Catalytic nanomaterials and eco-nano-technologies for valorization of natural resources;
• Synthesis of the hybrid materials obtained by functionalization of mesoporous oxide supports with organic groups, metal organic complexes, enzymes and organic compounds extracted from plants
• Nano- and biocomposites with oxide nanoparticles and conductor polymers applied in water depollution, fuel cells and biophotofuel cell
• Advanced composite nanomaterials and technologies applied for water and air depollution [hydrodechlorination, declorination, denitration, deNOx, abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOC's), degradation of organic compounds];
• Novel materials for green energy production (fuel cells, photocatalytic generation of hydrogen under visible and solar irradiation);
• Fundamental studies of catalytic processes;
• Cito, eco-toxicity and antibacterial activity of catalytic nanomaterials.
• Permeation and catalytic processes with inorganic and composite membranes
