The Colloid group from "Ilie Murgulescu" Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Romanian Academy is a vibrant group of researchers spanning aspects of colloid science. The group has an interdisciplinary research theme focused on: functional colloids for advanced nano-materials and advanced composites applications in industry, biology, and medicine. They cover aspects such as the behavior of hydrophobically modified polymers, multilayer films of synthetic polymers for superhydrophobic surfaces, polymer-surfactant, and protein-polymer nanocomposites, micro-and nanoemulsions with applications in industry and biology such as enhanced oil recovery, alternative fuels, drug delivery, etc. Our scientific group is supported by a very well-equipped and modern lab with the latest fully computerized state-of-the-art apparatus to ensure the accuracy of advanced research and investigation in the colloid field. The laboratory has facilities for performing all kinds of tests on sample preparation (multilayers deposition, freeze-drying, sonication), structural characterization (FTIR spectrometry, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, fluorescence, circular dichroism spectroscopy), liquid measurements (light scattering techniques, viscometry), chromatography (gas, liquid, size exclusion, and capillary electrophoresis), surface measurements (contact angle, interfacial and superficial tensions) and rheology. In recent years, the Colloid Chemistry Lab was the coordinator and/or collaborator in grants and research projects obtained both from the European and Romanian Fund. Armed with superb chemistry problem-solving skills, our team of well-trained members carries out a wide range of collaborative activities with romanian and foreign partners .
